Crossrail will enter an 18-day blockade at the end of the month to allow outstanding construction work at Bond Street and Canary Wharf stations to be sped up.
The handover sequencing of the remaining Crossrail stations has also been amended following concerns about the level of work remaining, according to a project update from Crossrail Ltd.
Work at the stations was pushed back to allow Crossrail to enter a period of trial running, which involves running trains on the line as part of the extensive commissioning of the railway.
“There is an 18-day period for construction work, focussed on stations and routeway, planned for the end of June that will help mitigate pressures to the Trial Operations schedule,” the project update states.
“Station teams are working hard to ensure that handover of the stations is achieved to schedule, however Canary Wharf station and Bond Street station are not yet at the required level.
“To address these concerns the planned period of construction work scheduled for the end of June will be focussed on mitigating the challenges at these stations.”
In the latest publicly available Project Representative report (Prep 12), Jacobs warned that outstanding work at Bond Street, Whitechapel, Paddington and Canary Wharf threatens to delay Crossrail’s programme to get the Elizabeth Line open during the first half of 2022.
Jacobs warned that “effective mitigations” will be required at the four stations to avoid a delay in entering trial operations, which involves tests and trials to demonstrate that TfL is capable of operating the railway.
To combat this, the handover sequencing schedule for Crossrail stations has also been amended “to protect the trail operations schedule”.
“Woolwich station will now therefore be handed over to TfL ahead of Paddington in early summer,” the Crossrail project update adds.
“Woolwich and Liverpool Street stations will be the next stations to be handed over in the coming weeks and will be followed by Paddington station, Abbey Wood station and then Whitechapel station, all scheduled to be handed over in the summer.”
Despite these challenges, Crossrail is still “on track” to open during the first half of 2022.
