HS2 Ltd Phase 2 managing director Tim Smart will today outline the milestones ahead for the northern section of the high speed rail line, during his appearance at NCE’s Future of Rail conference.
Smart will unveil the timeline for procurement on the main works contracts for Phase 2a between the Midlands and Crewe. He will also give an update on plans for Phase 2b’s western leg to connect the line to Manchester.
Smart is set to reveal that an invitation to tender will be put out by November this year to find an integrated delivery partner for Phase 2a.
That contract is expected to be awarded in the first quarter of next year, with the tender process for main civils packages also due to be launched in the first half of next year.
Smart will also explain what lessons have been learnt from phase one and how they will be integrated into the delivery of Phase 2a and Phase 2b of the railway.
Lessons due to be covered by Smart include carrying out more detailed design work before bringing in contractors, harnessing advancements in digital modelling and enabling more modular construction.
He will also address the impact of the delayed Integrated Rail Plan as well as calls for better integration will local services.
