MODEL UNITED NATION AT INTERNATIONAL BURCH UNIVERSITY
Model United Nations is an academic simulation of the United Nations where students play the role of delegates from different countries and attempt to solve real world issues with the policies and perspectives of their assigned country.
For example, a student may be assigned the United Kingdom and will have to solve global topics such as nuclear non-proliferation or climate change from the policies and perspectives of the United Kingdom.
Students can attend Model United Nations conferences around the world. These conferences are organized by universities, high schools, non-profit organizations and other educational groups. Conferences are offered for different academic levels: college and university, high school, middle school and grade school.
The International Burch University has adopted new curriculum at the Department of International Relations and European Studies for masters and undergraduate level which will also include the study subject Model United Nation.
International Burch University will attend Model UN conference which will take place in New York in April 2022.
This conference is organised by National Model United Nation organisation of the United States of America defined as non-profit organization that advances understanding of the United Nations and contemporary international issues.
NMUN has been a recognized Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) formally associated with the United Nations Department of Global Communications since 1982 and a UN Academic Impact member since 2013.
Numerous NMUN conference speakers work for the UN. It has been privilege to have UN Secretaries-General Ban Ki-moon, Kofi Annan, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, and Kurt Waldheim; and Deputy Secretaries-General Amina J. Mohammed and Jan Eliasson serve as keynote speakers.
UN officials have also served as advisory group members and many student delegations meet with their official national delegations during the conference.
UN facilities, including the General Assembly Hall, are generally used on the last day of New York conferences.
International Burch University will be first university to attend Model UN New York Conference in 2021 from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This Conference will host more than 70 universities form all around the world.
Our delegation will represent the Republic of Cyprus in General Assemblies Committee (GA1,2 and 3), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), International Organization for Migration (IOM) and United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).
Cooperative, hands-on, experiential learning allows students to confront a range of topics with the perspective of their assigned country or organization. Through these experiences - during preparation in committee sessions and hallway caucuses - students develop an appreciation of differing viewpoints, experience the challenges of negotiation, see the rewards of cooperation, broaden their world view and discover the human side of international relations and diplomacy.
Our students will discuss following topics:
- 1. Countering the Threat Posed by Improvised Explosive Devices (GA1)
- 2. Reducing Nuclear Danger (GA1)
- 3. The Convention on Biological Diversity and Its Contribution to Sustainable Development (GA2)
- 4. Continued Implementation of the Third United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (2018–2027) (GA2)
- 5. Ensuring Equitable and Inclusive Access to Education (GA3)
- 6. The Right to Privacy in a Digital Age (GA3)

Head of the Department of International Relations and European Studies of the International Burch University, Assist. Prof. Alija Kožljak oversees the preparation of student delegation.
Students will have at least 5 Mock Sessions during preparation period. Mock Session is a simulation of real Model UN conference where each student represents one country, actively participate in debating, caucusing and drafting resolutions.
Since public speaking is one of the key skills to be gained through this type of education, International Burch University will engage public speaking expert to work with students in developing this skill. Each student will have one-to-one session with professional which is recorded and student speaks for 1 minute on simple topic.
After that, professor and expert will analyse the video with student, give advice for improvement and set personalised standard in public speaking for each student to meet until next session. These sessions will be carried out until high standards of public speaking are met.
The core objective is to affect the lives of students and prepare them to be better global citizens through quality educational experiences that emphasize collaboration and cooperative resolution of conflict.
We envision a world comprised of civically engaged people who strive for peaceful, multilateral conflict resolution and equitable, sustainable human development.
